Our journey to teaching you to drive
Before becoming a driving instructor, I worked as a welder—a career that gave me a real sense of pride and job satisfaction. I enjoyed seeing the finished result of my work, but I wanted a career where I could have an even bigger impact on people's lives.
That's what led me to start Crawford School of Motoring. There's nothing more rewarding than watching someone progress from their very first lesson to becoming a safe, confident driver with a skill they'll use for the rest of their life. Whether it's helping a nervous learner overcome their fears or celebrating a first-time pass, every success feels like a shared achievement.
Our special approach to teaching
Our approach is centred around patience, structure, and building confidence. Every lesson is tailored to the individual, with clear goals, progress tracking, and honest feedback, so students always know where they are and what comes next. We don't just aim to help people pass their driving test—we want them to leave as safe, capable drivers who feel confident.
Confidence and safety on the road
Above all, I want every student to leave feeling confident, safe, and proud of what they've achieved. Learning to drive isn't just about passing a test—it's about gaining the freedom and independence that comes with being able to drive safely for life. I want my students to enjoy the learning process, build confidence with every lesson, and know they can handle real-world driving situations on their own. If they finish their lessons believing in their own ability and feeling excited to drive independently, then I've done my job.

Derren Crawford
Founder & Instructor
I'm Derren Crawford, founder and instructor at Crawford School of Motoring. I take great pride in the standard of tuition we provide and believe that learning to drive should never be about cutting corners or simply getting through a test. My aim is to help every student become a safe, confident and capable driver for life.
I'm known for my calm, patient and approachable teaching style, creating an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and learning at their own pace. Every learner is different, so I adapt my lessons to suit the individual rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach.
As an instructor, I'm always looking for ways to improve. Whether it's developing new teaching methods, introducing modern learning resources or continuing my own professional development, I believe there's always something new to learn. By continually improving myself, I can provide the very best experience for my students and help them reach their full potential behind the wheel.
Outside of work, I'm a proud husband and dad to two daughters and a son, and family time is incredibly important to me. When I do get a chance to switch off, you'll usually find me gaming on my PS5 or Xbox, or watching football whenever I can. I think having interests outside of work helps me build genuine relationships with my students, and it often gives us plenty to chat about during lessons!

Darvin Crawford
Approved Driving Instructor
I'm Darvin, Derren's older brother and one of the instructors here at Crawford School of Motoring. It was actually Derren who introduced me to the world of driving instruction. Before making the switch, I spent over 10 years working as a laboratory analyst. While I enjoyed aspects of the job, I felt there was limited room for growth and lacked the job satisfaction I was looking for. Seeing how much Derren enjoyed helping people achieve their goals inspired me to give it a go myself.
My teaching style is centred around learning by doing. Everyone makes mistakes when they're learning, and I believe those mistakes are often the best opportunities to grow. There's nothing more rewarding than seeing a learner overcome their nerves, build confidence and achieve something they once thought they couldn't.
Outside of work, I'm a relaxed, laid-back person with a slightly unhealthy obsession with fishing. So don't be surprised if you end up getting the odd fishing story—or even a lesson on how to fish—alongside your driving lesson!
