Your essential driving test guide

Preparing for your driving test can feel daunting, but with the right guidance, you can approach it with confidence. At Crawford School of Motoring, we believe that success comes from understanding what to expect and focusing on safe, independent driving. This guide covers everything you need to know to feel prepared and ready to ace your test.

Frequently asked questions about the driving test

We've gathered the most common questions our learners ask about the driving test to help you feel fully prepared. Our goal is to demystify the process and equip you with the knowledge to drive safely and confidently.

What's the most important advice you'd give someone getting ready for their driving test?

The most important advice I give every pupil is to stop focusing on passing the test and start focusing on driving safely and confidently. The driving test isn't designed to catch you out—it's simply an assessment of whether you can drive independently without putting yourself or others at risk. Trust the training you've received, take your time, keep your observations consistent, and don't let one small mistake affect the rest of your drive. Stay calm, make safe decisions, and remember that good judgement is always more important than trying to be perfect.

What happens during the driving test, from start to finish?

Your driving test begins with a simple eyesight check, followed by one 'Tell Me' vehicle safety question before you set off. During the test, you'll also be asked one 'Show Me' question while driving. The practical test lasts around 40 minutes and includes approximately 20 minutes of independent driving, where you'll follow either road signs or directions from a sat nav. Throughout the drive, the examiner will ask you to pull up on the left safely at various points and move away again when it's safe to do so. You'll also be asked to complete one reversing manoeuvre and an emergency stop. The examiner will be assessing your ability to drive safely, confidently and independently throughout the entire test. It's not about being perfect—it's about consistently making safe decisions and demonstrating that you're ready to drive on your own.

What are the biggest concerns or mistakes you see learners make during their test, and how can they avoid them?

The most common mistakes I see aren't usually caused by a lack of driving ability—they're caused by nerves, rushing decisions, or forgetting the basics under pressure. Common faults include missing effective observations at junctions, poor mirror checks before changing speed or direction, incorrect positioning, hesitation when it's safe to proceed, and failing to respond appropriately to developing hazards. The best way to avoid these mistakes is to slow down mentally, take your time, and trust the training you've received. Focus on good observations, plan ahead, and remember that the examiner is looking for safe, consistent decision-making rather than perfection. One small mistake doesn't mean you've failed, so don't let it affect the rest of your drive. Stay calm, reset your focus, and keep driving safely.

What should learners do right after they pass (or if they don't quite pass this time)?

If you pass your driving test, take time to celebrate your achievement—but remember that passing is only the beginning of your journey as a driver. The real learning starts once you're driving independently, so continue to build your experience, stay patient, and always prioritise safe driving over confidence alone. If you don't pass this time, don't be discouraged. A driving test is simply a snapshot of one drive on one day and doesn't define your ability as a driver. Review the feedback with your instructor, focus on the areas that need improvement, and use it as a learning opportunity. Many excellent drivers don't pass first time, and with the right guidance and preparation, you'll come back stronger and more confident for your next attempt.
